Welcome to Mik Mak
For a creative person, there is nothing more beautiful than creating and nothing worse than sitting idle. We help new comers with their most precious and cherished part of themselves to be used as a contribution to society. Therefore, every refugee who possesses a craft or an art should be given the opportunity to create. Because a chance to create is a chance to live.
Our story
The number of asylum seekers and refugees in the Netherlands is growing every day. For this group, finding social, cultural, and professional integration is not always straightforward. This leads to psychological issues, isolation, and alienation among this population. Refugees who are makers, artists, or craftsmen have limited opportunities to practice their professions in the Netherlands. They lack materials and networks necessary for their craft. In building a life in the Netherlands, they are forced to set aside their craft, which is certainly not desirable for individuals whose passion lies in creation. This hinders the process of participation and integration, and it also results in the loss of authentic craftsmanship. The two aforementioned problems, namely newcomers from crisis areas who cannot fully integrate and the decline of cultural heritage from these regions, can be addressed simultaneously. Mik Mak aims to support this group in their pursuit to utilize their talents, skills, and knowledge in their new living environment. We intend to achieve this by building local networks and providing workspace/studio areas that cater to the needs of this target group in terms of craftsmanship and artistic endeavors.
