Welcome pickle friend

In Turkish, the word "horanta" is a slang term that is generally used to refer to a group of people, often friends or acquaintances, who hang out together, have fun, and engage in activities together. It can also imply a group of people who spend a lot of time together, socialize, and share common interests. That is why we call our fermentation brand 'Horanta'. 

 

Fermentation has many benefits, such as: preservation, nutrient enhancement, digestive health, flavour and diversity, food waste reduction and cultural heritage and connection. But one of the most important things is that it is fun to do with as many people as possible. That's  why ECCA Foundation started it's own pickle brand 'Horanta'. Horanta connects pickle loving people with a group of friendly bacteria for a healthy lifestyle.

Old culture new habits

The decision to venture into the world of pickles was not a difficult one for us. After all, every culture has its unique way of pickling. Our team comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds - Bosnia, Turkey, Iran, the Netherlands, Syria, Suriname, and Italy. As we delved into our family histories, we discovered a common thread: all of our grandparents had their own pickle-making traditions.

Driven by curiosity, we began exploring various methods of fermenting different foods. Along the way, we stumbled upon the numerous positive effects of consuming pickled foods. Some of us had been struggling with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome and difficulties in digesting food. Our research led us to a remarkable revelation - doctors often introduce beneficial bacteria into the gut to aid those with poor digestive systems. These same bacteria, we discovered, could be obtained from fermented foods.

Realizing the immense potential and benefits of fermentation, we decided to focus our efforts in this direction. We started experimenting with creating yogurts, brewing ginger beer, and pickling a plethora of vegetables. This journey not only taught us the art of treating food and our bodies but also provided insights into sourcing organic vegetables and preserving surplus produce.

Inspired by our newfound knowledge and driven by a shared passion, we established Horanta. Through our range of fermented products and workshops, we aim to provide not only a delicious culinary experience but also support gut health and overall well-being. Our multicultural team brings together a wealth of traditions, techniques, and flavors, ensuring that Horanta's offerings reflect the rich tapestry of our diverse backgrounds.
